Michael Lyne
20th Century Painter
English, 1912-1989
Of all the 20th century sporting artists, our gallery has sold more work by this artist than any other. We worked directly with Michael Lyne in the early 1980's and imported many oils, watercolors and drawings. In 2006 we were fortunate enough to buy hundreds of original watercolor and pencil sketches Lyne completed between 1930-1950, both in the UK & in the States. This was truly one of the most exciting art purchases we've ever made. We agree with Stella Walker, the well known British Sporting art historian, that, "time will confirm that Michael Lyne ranks as one of the most important artists of his generation." Although Lyne greatly admired both Munnings and Edwards and acknowledged that they were major influences on his early career, he soon developed a style that was distinctly his own. His oil and watercolor work represented many sporting subjects from fox hunting to racing. Not afraid of color or a bold brush stroke, his pictures are full of light and action. It has been said that his death marked the end of an era of great sporting artists. We concur.
